Every patient has unique needs and goals for lip filler treatment, so each treatment session is different. Still, there are things that any patient can expect to happen during their lip filler treatment. The first thing that will happen for any patient considering lip filler treatment is an initial consultation with your lip filler specialist.
 
During this consultation, your provider will conduct a thorough analysis of your treatment needs, medical history, and lip health to ensure you can safely receive treatment and establish a plan to achieve your goals for treatments.
 
After the consultation, lip filler treatment will proceed as long as you approve the treatment plan. There are many different types of lip fillers, so the specific ingredients used in the filler will depend on what product you choose. That said, the procedure will begin with your lip filler specialist cleaning the area with a disinfectant and possibly applying an anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
 
Around 15 to 30 minutes after applying the anesthetic, they will inject the filler into your lips with a small needle or a micro cannula. They will make sure your lips are numb before proceeding with this step. They may inject the filler into the edges of your lips, the center of your upper lip, and the corners where both lips meet. These areas are also known as your vermillion border, Cupid’s bow, and your oral commissures.
 
As they inject the filler, you may experience a slight pinching sensation, causing your eyes to water. Your lip filler specialist will then massage your lips to ensure the filler distributes evenly throughout your lips.

Some things to avoid after lip fillers include:
 
• Using an exfoliating product or cleaning brush for 24 hours after treatment
• Having a facial massage for at least two weeks after treatment
• Drinking through a straw for the day after treatment to avoid pressure on your lips
• Drinking alcohol for 24 hours after treatment
• Exercising excessively for at least 24 hours after treatment
• Taking medications that thin your blood, such as Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like advil
• Applying lipstick, lip balm or other lip products for 24 hours after treatment
 
You should also drink plenty of water after treatment and be gentle when brushing your teeth to avoid injuring your lips.

Your lips will look fuller immediately after lip filler treatment, but this is mainly due to swelling. After the swelling goes down, it will take approximately four weeks for the lip filler to settle in with your desired results. The length of time the filler results last depends on the product you’re using, but can last anywhere from six to 18 months.

Some swelling, bruising, and minor bleeding at injection sites are common after lip filler treatment. However, these side effects are temporary and should not cause you any extended issues. The swelling should go down within two to three days and completely subside within two weeks. To reduce swelling, you can apply ice wrapped in a towel or cold compress to your lips. It’s also recommended to sleep with your head elevated to limit blood flow and fluid retention in your lips overnight.
